This event is part of the Great Big Green Week:
Great Big Green Week on the Yorkshire Coast
Seascapes and sensory shoals in Space
- Date: June 07, 2025 - 11am till 4pm
- Location: Scarborough Art Gallery, The Crescent, Scarborough, YO11 2PW
- Organiser: Scarborough Museums and Galleries

Our regular Tuesday Drop In group and participants from Cross Lane Hospital have been busy creating a new exhibition in Space to Be, in response to our permanent collection of seascapes, and the return of the Grimshaws. Two new seascapes on the wall have been created by regular visitors, during a workshop facilitated by artist, Molly Newham. Listening to Molly’s explanation of the autobiographical approach to her landscapes, our participants painted their own memorable places along the coast. Our shoals of herring, which dip and dive into the seascapes have been inspired by photographs and paintings of our fishing heritage. The collaged lighthouses were created by participants from Cross Lane Hospital and were inspired by the collages in our exhibitions. The lighthouses represent ‘hope’ in difficult times. You might also notice some ‘little boats of hope’ appearing on our mantlepieces. Art has a magical way of unlocking conversations about environmental issues, and we have been using our sessions to talk about sustainable fishing and the importance of protecting our beautiful coastline. All of our art makes use of recycled materials.
