Learn to harness the benefits of clay soils and work around its limitations. Clay! Cloddy, mucky stuff that sticks to your boots and is a pain to turnover… but also rich, fertile soil that holds water like nothing else! Here in London we’re beset by all the benefits and limitations of working with clay. Join us at the Ital Community Garden to get to grips with the important considerations when working with clay, how to improve it, indeed, how to learn to love it! About your trainer: Richard Chocksey Richard is a community food grower and nature-engagement practitioner based in London. He trained in botanical horticulture at Cambridge University Botanic Garden and Kew Gardens and subsequently took an MA in Global History at Birkbeck. He has worked on the ground with Meanwhile Gardens, Black Rootz and Coco Collective and until recently facilitated networking and organisational skills sharing between community gardens and city farms with Social Farms & Gardens. He currently does community and youth engagement at Chelsea Physic Garden. You will learn: - How to identify the soil texture on your site - How to identify the different soil horizons on your site - How to care for your soil, improve its structure and build depth and fertility.
